May 2026: Marketing calendar and content ideas
By Lottie Owen-Jones •
May is full of opportunities, and we’re here for it. Every month, we’ll dig into the marketing calendar so you don’t have to, pulling out the dates worth knowing and giving you one actionable idea per date that you can actually use.
Monthly theme: National Walking Month
Perfect for: Fitness, wellness, fashion, food, pet, outdoor and lifestyle brands.
The idea: Launch a “Walk With Us” challenge on Instagram. Ask your followers to share their favorite walk using a branded hashtag, then feature the best ones on your Stories all month long. It builds community and keeps you visible for 31 days without spending a penny on ads.
Key awareness weeks
11–17 May: Mental Health Awareness Week
Ideal for: Wellness, beauty, fitness, food and candle brands.
The idea: Create a free “5 Things That Actually Help” downloadable guide. Keep it simple, on-brand, and genuinely useful, offering it in exchange for an email sign-up. You grow your list while showing your audience you care about more than just selling.
16–24 May: National Doughnut Week
Best for: Bakeries, cafes, food brands and subscription boxes.
The idea: Run a “Design Our Next Doughnut” poll on Instagram Stories. Give your audience three wild flavor options to vote on, and actually make the winning one! Bonus points if you let the winner name it. It gets your followers invested in the outcome and gives you easy content for weeks.
19–23 May: Chelsea Flower Show
Perfect for: Garden, home, interiors, gift, fashion and lifestyle brands.
The idea: You don’t need to be a gardening brand to jump on this. Create a “Chelsea-inspired” product edit or mood board featuring florals, seasonal palettes, or tablescapes. Pin it to the top of your grid and tie it to a curated collection that only runs during show week.
Key dates
4 May: Early May Bank Holiday + Star Wars Day
Ideal for: Any B2C brand with a fun, playful tone.
The idea: Run a one-day-only “May the 4th” flash sale. Give it 24 hours, one solid deal, and one punchy caption. You don’t need to be a sci-fi brand; the pun does the heavy lifting. It’s a highly engaging day on social media and your competitors are likely sleeping on it.
8 May: VE Day (81st Anniversary)
Best for: Food, drink, heritage, lifestyle and local businesses.
The idea: Share a “then vs. now” post about your brand or local area that connects your business to history without feeling forced. Think of a photo of your high street in the 1940s versus today. This is a day for storytelling, not selling.
12 May: International Nurses Day
Perfect for: Beauty, self-care, gifting, food and wellness brands.
The idea: Offer an NHS discount for 24 hours (even 10-15% off goes a long way). Post about it the day before and tag your local hospital or NHS trust. This type of post almost always gets reshared, drives real goodwill and puts your brand in front of thousands of new eyes.
13 May: World Cocktail Day
Ideal for: Food, drink, hospitality, lifestyle and gifting brands.
The idea: Create a signature cocktail (or mocktail) named after your bestselling product and post the recipe as a Reel. Keep it highly visual. Sell candles? Name it after your top scent. Skincare? Match your brand colours. It’s highly saveable content for people looking to mix things up at home.
16 May: Eurovision Grand Final
Best for: Food, drink, fashion, lifestyle, beauty and gifting brands.
The idea: Bundle your products into a limited “Eurovision Party Pack” and push it the week before the final. Think snacks, drinks, fun accessories, whatever fits. People actively plan Eurovision nights and want inspiration. Be the brand that makes their night easier.
17 May: World Baking Day
Perfect for: Food, kitchenware, gifting and lifestyle brands.
The idea: Launch a user-generated content (UGC) campaign. Ask your audience to share their best bake using your product—or just inspired by your brand aesthetic and tag you for a chance to win a small prize or be featured on your grid. Baking content gets huge engagement, and it gives you a library of free, authentic content to use later.
20 May: World Bee Day
Ideal for: Eco, sustainable, food, garden, wellness and beauty brands.
The idea: Pledge something small and shout about it. Plant wildflowers in your workspace, swap to beeswax packaging, or donate £1 from every sale that day to a bee charity. It doesn’t have to be big; it just has to be real. Audiences spot performative eco-content easily, so ensure whatever you pledge, you actually do.
22 May: National Beer Garden Day
Best for: Food, drink, hospitality, outdoor and lifestyle brands.
The idea: Partner with a local pub or bar for the day to offer a discount to their customers, co-post on socials, or create a product specifically designed for the beer garden. Local collabs are massively underutilised by small businesses, making this the perfect low-effort excuse to make one happen.
25 May: Spring Bank Holiday
Perfect for: All B2C brands.
The idea: Don’t wait until the day itself. Send a bank holiday email the Thursday prior with a clear, time-limited offer framed as a “long weekend treat.” Keep it short with a bold CTA. Advance bank holiday emails consistently outperform same-day sends.
29 May: National Biscuit Day
Ideal for: Food, gifting, subscription boxes and lifestyle brands.
The idea: Ask your audience the most divisive question in Britain: “Digestive or Hobnob?” (For the record, the CoLab team is firmly Team Hobnob). It takes zero effort, drives huge engagement, and keeps your brand popping up in feeds right before the weekend. Sometimes, the simplest content wins.
Want help turning these ideas into actual content, campaigns, or a full social media strategy? That’s exactly what we do at CoLab Marketers. Get in touch, we’d love to help.
Please note: While we do our best to make sure all dates are accurate at the time of publishing, we always recommend double-checking before planning your campaigns, as dates can occasionally change.
